Biriyani is one such recipe which you can play around with spices and main ingredient and create your own recipe. But mastering the art of making a perfect biriyani is never easy. It may take quite a few attempts in achieving that level(atleast in my case) and you can never get casual in making a good biriyani.

Fish Biriyani will definitely be a delight for all fish lovers.Do try it out…

Recipe for Fish Biriyani

Ingredients required

Fish (cut into large cubes) – 3/4 kg(You can use either King fish/Aiyakoora/neymeen )

Basmati rice – 1/2 kg

chilli powder – 1 tbsp

Turmeric powder – 1/4 tbsp

fennel seeds – 1/2 tbsp

coriander leaves/cilantro – 3 sprigs(chopped)

Mint leaves – 5-6 sprigs(chopped)

Onion(sliced) – 2 and 1/2 cups
garlic paste – 2 tbsp

Ginger paste – 2 tbsp

Green chillies- 3 no.s(cut into two lengthwise)

Tomato – 2 medium sized(sliced)

Garam masala – 1/2 tbsp

cloves, cardamom, star anise , cinnamon – 3 each + a small piece mace

Ghee – 50 g

Oil (for frying onions and for frying fish) – I personally use coconut oil for frying onions and sunflower oil for frying fish. You can use oil of your choice.

Salt – As per taste

Method of Preparation

Prepare rice as per instruction given in the packet. Some calls for soaking, some not. Follow it correctly and cook rice in boiling water,drain and reserve. While cooking rice add cloves, cinnamon , star anise , mace and cardamom.

Marinate fish with chilli powder, turmeric powder, fennel seeds and enough salt.
In a frying pan add oil and heat for frying fish. Add marinated fish for frying.(Add only oil such that the fish can be fried)

In another saucepan saute 2 cups onions till translucent. To this add green chillies, garlic paste, ginger paste and continue saute.

Now add tomatoes , garam masala ,coriander leaves and mint leaves.Add salt as per taste. Now add fried fish along with oil to this . Add little water and let it simmer for 10 minutes.Fry 1/2 cup onion till golden brown and reserve.

Now in a saucepan or pot,assemble fish masala and reserved rice alternatively such that bottom layer is fish masala and top layer is rice.Also add fried onions and ghee over rice layer.Over the topmost rice layer add a more quantity of ghee.

Place the saucepan and cover with a lid . Over it place some weight over it. Let it simmer for 10 minutes.

Fish biriyani is ready to be served.
