Varutharacha Kozhi curry/Chicken Curry

Chicken, in any form(should be cooked J). I just love it .Fried ,curried,baked…whatever ! I just don’t mind ….. My roommate at NIT Calicut,Mayuri Bhate who is also a very good friend of mine used to stare with disbelief when she would see me gobbling up chicken pieces one after the other. Greeshma, another friend,even recorded a video of me gobbling down chicken and my friends used to laugh at it so much that I used to feel ashamed of myself. But, that never stopped me from eating chicken!

Here is the recipe of another chicken curry in a traditional way. Varutharacha Kozhi curry/Chicken curry is always been my mother’s special. Check out the recipe and fall in love with it…..

Ingredients required

Chicken-Half kg

Freshly Grated Coconut – 1and 1/2cup

Pepper powder-1 tsp

Fennel powder-1 tsp

Ginger-1 inch piece

Garlic-8-9 flakes

Coconut oil-4 tbsp(You can use any refined oil instead of coconut oil)

Chilli powder- 1 tbsp

Coriander powder- 2 tbsp

Turmeric powder- 1/4tsp

Onion- 1 medium sized(chopped)

Green chillies-2

Tomato-2(chopped)

Garam masala- 1/4 tsp

Curry leaves- 3 sprigs

Salt- As per requirement

Method of Preparation

Clean chicken pieces and reserve. Heat 1 tbsp oil in a saucepan and sauté grated coconut, pepper powder, fennel powder, ginger and garlic till brown in colour. Now add chilli powder, coriander powder, turmeric powder and sauté for 3-4 minutes. Leave it to cool and grind it to a paste. Add 2-3 cups of water to this paste depending upon the curry you need and reserve. Now heat a saucepan and add 3 tbsp oil and add in onions, green chillies, tomato and sauté till the colour of onions turn transparent. Now add the coconut paste, add chicken pieces, garam masala, curry leaves. Cook till chicken is tender. The curry is ready.
